Has Western media been lying through its teeth about Aleppo?

Since the “liberation/fall” of Aleppo has been confirmed, by which it can be assumed as of now that the forces of Bashar al-Assad, backed by the loose coalition of Russia, Iran and in parts, Turkey (a still debatable aspect), have secured the rebel-held eastern parts of the Syrian city, the story of Aleppo, the big narrative, has changed overnight.

The Secret Witness

AresizerUndercover with the kar sevaks in Ayodhya, winter 1992
Each time I read about Ayodhya, it reminds me of the terrifying experience I went through during my first visit to the holy town in 1992. Armed with a letter of introduction from a member of the Delhi unit of the BJP, I had wormed my way into the ranks of the kar sevaks at Ayodhya. Initially I was put through intense grilling. Several times I had to recite an apocryphal tale of being a Kashmiri Hindu who had abandoned his studies in Kashmir because of militant activity. But after I was accepted as ‘genuine’, I saw at first hand the face of the religious drama that had remained veiled by political hoopla.

Demonetisation has India on the edge

Ars 2000 note 759By ASHOK SWAIN

Modi’s so-called surgical strike against black money has turned out to be a carpet bombing on the lower middle class and poor families in India.

On November 8, 2016, at 8pm, in the name of curbing the black money menace in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that from midnight currency notes of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 denomination will not be legal tender.

The Guardian view on India’s demonetisation: Modi has brought havoc to India

AmodidemonitaaaOn the night Donald Trump was elected the next US president, one of his fellow nationalist populist politicians chose to implement chaos in a land not famed for order. In a surprise TV address Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, announced that all 500- and 1,000-rupee notes would be withdrawn immediately from circulation. At a stroke Mr Modi rendered 86% of currency worthless outside a bank branch. Old notes would have to be exchanged for limited supplies of new currency.

Where Does Trump Stand On Afghanistan, Pakistan And India?

A lot has been written about President-elect Donald Trump’s vague foreign policy plan, as the real estate mogul has failed to put forth a concrete programme regarding America’s future position on the wars in Iraq and Syria, or relations with Russia or China.

An American Tragedy

By David Remnick

The election of Donald Trump to the Presidency is nothing less than a tragedy for the American republic, a tragedy for the Constitution, and a triumph for the forces, at home and abroad, of nativism, authoritarianism, misogyny, and racism. Trump’s shocking victory, his ascension to the Presidency, is a sickening event in the history of the United States and liberal democracy. On January 20, 2017, we will bid farewell to the first African-American President—a man of integrity, dignity, and generous spirit—and witness the inauguration of a con who did little to spurn endorsement by forces of xenophobia and white supremacy. It is impossible to react to this moment with anything less than revulsion and profound anxiety.

Will the Bhopal Killings make a beleaguered Indian Muslim community more fearful?

By Wajahat Qazi

Eight under trials – all Muslim members of the banned Student’s Islamic Movement of India- were killed in what has come to be held as a staged or fake encounter. The killings of the SIMI activists also comes in the context of the truculent and unyielding attitude and approach by the Centre towards the Kashmir unrest which has now completed four months and shows no sign of abating.

Indian paper blasts Saudi war in Yemen

AyapU0FHSaudi Arabia’s 18-month-long military operation in Yemen has been replete with attacks on civilian centres and mass casualties. But even by recent standards, the horrific strike on a mourning hall in Sana’a on October 8 that left at least 140 people dead and more than 500 injured, most of them civilians, was unprecedented.

After a period of relative calm between the Turkish army and the PKK ended in July 2015, political tension and military confrontation have returned. Yet the current situation is suffering from a distinct lack of coverage thanks to increasing restrictions on the tools of communication.
